  • How do you actually verify a remodeler before signing anything?

I’m about to sign with a contractor for our bathroom and I’ve realised I haven’t actually verified anything about them beyond what they told me. They said they’re licensed and insured but I wouldn’t know how to check even if I wanted to, and I’m not sure whether it’s rude to ask for proof. I’ve been looking into the Trusted Kitchen and Bath Company of Palo Alto as one option, but the bigger issue is I don’t know what due diligence actually looks like in practice. Do you ask for a licence number and insurance certificate before signing, or is that overkill? And what happens if something goes wrong and they weren’t actually insured? I’d rather look slightly paranoid now than find out the hard way later.
