Steam Machine: Biggest Games Blocked by Anti-Cheat

The Steam Machine, powered by Valve’s SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system, faces a significant limitation for prospective buyers: many of the biggest PC games simply will not run on it. This is not due to any hardware weakness—the machine is more than capable of handling these titles—but rather a persistent software incompatibility. The core problem is anti-cheat software. Most modern multiplayer games use some form of anti-cheat to detect and prevent cheating, and the vast majority of these programs are designed exclusively for Windows. Because SteamOS is built on Linux, these games cannot launch, even if they include single-player or offline modes that require an initial anti-cheat check. Installing Windows on the Steam Machine is a workaround, but doing so undermines the device’s console-like, Linux-focused appeal.

The Core Issue: Anti-Cheat on Linux

Anti-cheat software operates at a deep level within the operating system. Many modern titles use kernel-level anti-cheat, which requires root-level access and relies on Windows-specific security features. Linux lacks these same security stacks, making it difficult for developers to implement effective anti-cheat support on the platform. Although some anti-cheat vendors offer Linux-compatible solutions, game developers must choose to enable them. Valve had hoped that a large installed base of Steam Machines would incentivize developers to do so, but the device’s price and limited availability may prevent that critical mass from forming.
